FAQ: Which Color Temperature Do I Need For My Space?

A common question is, “Which color temperature do I need for my space?” To determine this, you will need to understand the difference in color temperature options. The easy answer is, the lower the number, the more yellow the light output will be, the higher the number, the bluer the light output will be. Candlelight falls at 1000K, whereas daylight sits upwards of 10000K. Here is a scale to show where other sources of light fall on the Kelvin Temperature Chart.

Depending on which product you are inquiring about, Juniper may be able to offer custom light outputs. After choosing other options such as fixture size, metal finish, and lens finish, you may be prompted to choose a lens color temperature. For some products, we offer three temperature options; 2700K, 3000K, and 4000K. Although these temperatures are fairly close together, there are minor differences that could help warm or cool your space to the desired temperature. Here are some suggestions for color temperature and brightness by the type of space…

Temperature & Brightness Recommendations by Space

Bedroom

Bedrooms may very well be the most intimate space in your home. We recommend keeping the lights low and warm for a soothing mood that reduces anxiety and high-energy.

Suggested Total Brightness Level – 1,500 to 4,000 Lumens
Suggested Color Temperature: 2700-3000K

Dining Room

Warmer light can keep your appetite up and your dining room inviting. Keeping your dining room lighting on the brighter side will enable guests to see what they’re eating, but we recommend installing a dimmer to set the right mood for your dining space.

Suggested Total Brightness Level – 3,000 to 6,000 Lumens
Suggested Color Temperature: 2200-3000K

Bathroom

We recommend bathroom spaces to be cooler and brighter so they remain functional for your morning routine. A clean, fresh setting can be achieved through cooler light temperatures.

Suggested Total Brightness Level – 4,000 to 8,000 Lumens
Suggested Color Temperature: 3000-4000K

Kitchen

Brighter lighting for a kitchen is ideal to cast enough light for food prep and maneuvering around your space. The color temperature recommendation is wide open, since kitchens can be so versatile. Let the color palette in your space determine how warm or cool to make your lighting. Still can’t decide? A safe option would be our standard 3000K temperature, which casts a warm white light and looks great in any space.

Suggested Total Brightness Level – 4,000 to 8,000 Lumens
Suggested Color Temperature: 2700-5000K

Living Room or Lounge

Keep a living room or lounge dim and warm for a cozy and inviting mood, perfect for entertaining or relaxing after a long day.

Suggested Total Brightness Level – 1,500 to 3,000 Lumens
Suggested Color Temperature: 2200-3000K

Office or Workspace

To be productive, you’ll need some functional lighting. Keeping your lighting cooler and brighter can keep you alert and productive.

Suggested Total Brightness Level – 3,000 to 6,000 Lumens
Suggested Color Temperature: 3000-5000K
